His titles tumble together
from the Testament of Old,
Key of David, Dayspring, Wisdom,
fall freely from lips
stressing O in wonder and awe,
for he is the longed for
Messiah
the Hope of many,
and the invitation is
to let the babe of Bethlehem
enter our hearts
and settle in to stay.
“O come” repeats in chants
for those held captive
waiting expectantly
for the Son of God to appear.
From lofty heights
Wisdom is called to teach tenderly
the way to salvation.
Sinai’s burning bush beckons to
Moses to help set people free
by the Lord of power and might.
The Flower of Jesse’s stem
compels kings to
silently stand in worship.
The Key of royal David
unlocks the doors of death
for those dwelling in darkness.
Radiant Dawn lights up
the sky with shining splendor.
King of nations
and Keystone of all people
saves creatures formed from dust.
O come, we cry ceaselessly,
free us from our prisons
as we look at a starry night
filled with God’s light,
Jesus, you are our cornerstone.
Emmanuel, God is with us.
