remember

the salty taste of the ocean we 

bring into this life

when the waters recede and reveal 

the path on which 

a tiny green snake lies coiled

–everything we know goes nowhere — 

and we pause

as if to understand that gift

still 

to follow that empty trail

as it uncurls and slides away

to return what was given
