Catch and Release
When God does down with line and pole
to his favorite fish’in hole
that’s precisely his best plan:
he reels in a woman or a man,
admires their rainbow shimmering,
then throws ‘em back to go on swimming.
Some return with a hole in their cheek,
some with words they can’t really speak;
the water’s the same but different:
by day it’s a little more resplendent,
by night it’s deeper than they remember it.
Somehow they feel more free
for having be caught and released.
Maybe that’s the way to go
with just about everything we know:
when we look out the window…
be caught in the dream
when we go to the movies…
be caught in the scene
when we pull out the cellphone…
be caught in the talk
when we get on our feet
be caught in the walk.
Be caught for the moment, then release(d)
and go on your way a little more free.
