Winnipeg Christmas 2020

Festooned with lighted snow and Angel molds

Portage with streaming noisy vehicles

Racing to its well known junction at Main

Knows that somehow this is special time.

The northern vortex chooses to stay home

So snow in city streets melts just enough

Providing pleasant slush for trampling feet

To beat rhythms snare-like on wet concrete.

Bare dark trees silhouette against the sky.

Buildings sport colour lined window eyes.

South west low in night’s clear sky

Two ancient stranger planets align then

mimicking the great star of Bethlehem

Conveying to those of good will again

‘Peace, light, joy’ to all of them.

Frank Obrigewitsch, SJ, is pastor of St. Ignatius parish in Winnipeg.

I remember Christmas having “lots and lots of snow”! For the Santa Clause Parade on Broadway there were huge show banks. Looks different now but still beautiful!
