The Use of Tools

who knows how tools use us

and to what end?  the turmoil of stone

seeks relief in our hand.

the itch it cannot scratch gives the statue

its shape.

we bring our memories to the table. it

feeds others.

everything in this world is difficult   but

there are gifts.

the discarded saddle and handlebar

becomes a bull’s head. Picasso’s genius.

even though

the snake, its skin shed, remains

the same.   there is music

in the wood before the piano is

made.

the ring of the ax strikes a cord.
