Shrove Tuesday
Hey! The day before the dust
settles on forty nights
let’s all raise a flap
Jack—stack’em higher
than high past the wi-fi
sky and galactic gadgets
merry-go rounding earth
tuned-in for drips of juice
Pile the cakes like Jake’s
old apple orchard ladder
run angels up and down
between stone pillows
and heaven’s goosy billows
we’ll make the desert cry
with joy for the miracle
of maple syrup
Today the Kingdom looks
like a cabane à sucre
mes amis, passez-moi la douceur
pour it on until it’s gone
tomorrow when we eat ash
and wander the lowest highway
ditches with big plastic bags
for empty beers cans
and other littered sins
we’ll break and wipe our brows
only to remember
we’re marked for death…
And yes, oh yes,
new life.
