Novum Ordo Saeculi
Darwin looked close and so his bloody law
Eclipsed the God who cared if sparrows fall,
Revealed instead the war of all ‘gainst all:
Stepmother Nature, red in tooth and claw.
Eat or be eaten; such is nature’s way,
And mankind’s, too, as told by Adam Smith:
The capitalist kin consuming kith.
Far better to be predator than prey!
So Agamemnon Iphigenia slew
To get fair winds to sail to Trojan parts,
Huitzilopochtli gorged on human hearts
And children baked so Moloch got his due.
But in Christ Incarnate’s eucharistic feast
The victim-victor greatest feeds the least.
