Pilgrims’ Progress: Journal Entries from a 60th Anniversary Pilgrimage – #17

On August 15, 2019, thirteen Canadian Jesuits noted their 60th Anniversary as members of the Society of Jesus.  Two members of this group – Charlie Pottie Pate, SJ and David Eley, SJ  – have chosen to make a special pilgrimage to mark the occasion.  They have graciously agreed to share their journal entries and photos with igNation which will post them once or twice a week.

We will begin our retreat at the Trappist Monastery Mt St. Bernard’s tonight.

Our trip from Helsinki to Manchester (David’s family) via Copenhagen was smooth going, even if we had to leave in the middle of the night (the Midnight Sun was shining brightly enough at 3:45 am!)

We were met by one of David’s cousins (Steven and Nula) and went to his home for a hearty breakfast. Then to another cousin’s (Barry and Kathleen) where we were lodging. Very restful stay. They had organized a family gathering on Sunday June 23 to celebrate the 80th birthday of Barry and to welcome David on his visit.

Was a wonderful afternoon in the back yard / garden with a potluck meal. We were about 35 people. Then after some families had to leave about 7 pm we went into the house and brought in cake for  Barrie’s birthday. He gave a little speech. Touching. Always a gift to be part of a family gathering. Makes me grateful for the times of my family reunions and get togethers.

We had the chance to have some more time with a few of the family in the day following. We even got to enjoy some fish and chips at a nearby pub. Then we passed part of the day in Central Manchester and went to the Art Gallery. After our return we had a lovely dinner with David’s cousins – Kathleen and Barrie.

We left early to go by coach to the monastery – a fair distance away  So I will write after the retreat.  The monastery photos are taken from the website of the Abbey.  Keep us in your prayer as we will you.

Charles Pottie Pate, SJ, is the Prairie and Rockies regions Ecclesial Assistant for CLC. He resides at St. Mary's Cathedral Rectory, Calgary.
