For over 400 years, Jesuits and their colleagues have had a presence in Canada. Today they work coast to coast - from Vancouver to St.John's. In this series igNation invites you to join us as we travel across Canada stopping at cities where there are Jesuit apostolates to read personal reflections about the city and the work being done there. Images of crisis fill our newsfeeds. Nepal? Crisis.Mediterranean? Crisis. Baltimore? Crisis. What are we seeing? Natural disaster? Irresponsible ship-captains and illegal humans? Violent thugs? I grew up in California, I know a bit about earthquakes, so I'll start there. We're seeing the effects of our faults.Faults naturally rupture and shift in order to relieve tension in a constantly changing world. What we see in each of these circumstances could rightly be considered a fault in this sense -- a momentary rupture, a temporary crisis, a tragic accident. Much commentary will focus on these stories as a passing crisis (pushing traffic and trending hashtags). But what is happening here is more than a crisis; this tremor is more than a trend, this violence is more than a viral video. To actually understand what's happening when a fault ruptures we must ask: What's below the surface?Reprinted with permission from The Jesuit Post (thejesuuitpost.org), April 29, 2015....

Thus, it is fitting that the June prayer intention entrusted to the worldwide Apostleship of Prayer by Pope Francis is for a subject very dear to his heart: "that immigrants and refugees may find welcome and respect in the countries to which they come."...

April 25, 2015 was a day of a tragedy for the people of Nepal. The massive earthquake killed 8,000 people and injured 19,000. But one event - the ordination of Nepal's first native born Jesuit priest - saved the lives of about 150 people. Canadian Jesuit, Bill Robins, SJ - Socius to the Provincial, described what happened. The post begins with Bill's letter to me that accompanied his posting....

As I tapped Morneeng" (a special greeting that Fr Elton Fernandes performs exclusively to JAGs that he picked up from Filipinas somewhere) to confirm our 3 pm meeting last December 27, I was excited to be visiting the Xavier Retreat House in Cheung Chau, Hong Kong. I have heard so much about Xavier House from the Wah Yan alumni in our Jesuit Alumni Group that I had to add it to my itinerary. That it would take around two hours each way did not really matter. This was my Christmas gift to myself."...
