One of my responsibilities is to help our Jesuit Provincial Superior as his Assistant for the Native Apostolate. I've carried out that responsibility for over a year. I was stunned when Fr. Bisson asked me to do this, because I've shamefully had so little experience of Aboriginal People or their culture. Within a month or so, I found myself being consoled that I said yes. The role means that I'm supposed to be a support for our Jesuit ministries with indigenous peoples....

Pope Francis has some consistent themes, concerns that he raises from time to time. One deals with human trafficking. It's no surprise, therefore, to read this month's universal prayer intention, entrusted to the Apostleship of Prayer around the globe: "That human trafficking, the modern form of slavery, may be eradicated."...

We celebrated, in 2011, the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first Jesuits in Canada, at Cape Breton, N.S. It is impossible to look at the history of Canada without considering the life of Saint Jean de Brébeuf, the seventeenth century missionary and pioneer. Brébeuf was born in Normandy, France on 25 March 1593 and entered the Jesuits at the age of 24. In 1625, a few years after being ordained to the priesthood, he sailed for Quebec. It is ironic that his formation was shortened due to poor health, since the giant of the Huron missions" would be recognized as the most robust of the black robes in the region of Huronia."...

Robert Safian, the Editor of Fast Company, has coined a term that he has used in a few articles: generation flux. The attraction of this term is that it is not confined to a particular age group, such as a term like Generation X would be. It's beyond Generations X, Y, and Z. It's beyond any age specific group. Safian describes Generation Flux as the group of people best positioned to thrive in today's era of high-velocity change."...

Today is Labour Day and tomorrow - well, tomorrow is the day most schools start up again - tomorrow is the unofficial start of fall and a reminder that winter is not far behind. How do we deal with all of this?...

Youth unemployment is an issue around the world. We see it firsthand here in North America, but it is also in evidence throughout the world, whether developed or developing. Those who reflect on youth unemployment worry about the long-term effects on both the young and our culture....

I've posted before about ideas that are covered by Fast Company magazine. The June 2015 issue looks at some of the most creative people in business. Robert Saflan, the Editor, offers twenty lessons of creativity. They aren't restricted to the business world. I offer them and add my own reflections, adapting them for a Christian-based approach to creative energy. That's a slight challenge in a few cases. Perhaps you can use your own creativity to apply some of his lessons to your world....

The universal prayer intention entrusted to the worldwide Apostleship of Prayer by Pope Francis recognizes and asks us to pray for volunteers: That volunteers may give themselves generously to the service of the needy." I occasionally hear someone mutter something about how our contemporary North American culture is so selfish, with individuals turned in on themselves. That may be true of some people. But it is not my experience of our culture."...

Today is Ignatius Day, the anniversary of the death of Saint Ignatius of Loyola on July 31, 1556. Jesuits around the world celebrate Ignatius on this day. In honour of St. Ignatius, I thought I'd offer a few of my favourite images from Ignatius' Spiritual Exercises, all of which help us to be more discerning in daily life....
