After eleven years as Secretary for the Social Apostolate at the Jesuit Curia in Rome, I worked on AIDS in Africa from 2002 to 2010 as the founding coordinator of the African Jesuit AIDS Network, based in Nairobi....

Many Canadian Jesuits began their religious life on 15th August, but nowadays the anniversary is usually marked on 31st July. This year the solemn Mass of St Ignatius Loyola was celebrated at St Isaac Jogues Parish, Pickering, and on behalf of the class of 1964, Fr Michael Czerny S.J. preached the homily after readings about Elijah meeting God at Horeb (1 Kings 19:4-9a, 11-15a), Knowing Christ and pressing towards the goal (Philippians 3:8-14), and Tips for following Christ (Luke 9:57-62)....

Father James Kevin McKenna, SJ died peacefully on March 22nd 2014 at René Goupil House, Pickering, Ontario. He was in his 93rd year and in the Society of Jesus for 71 years. He was well appreciated in education and church circles particularly in Newfoundland. Among his Jesuit companions he was respected for his intelligence and pastoral care. In today's post, Fr. Michael Czerny, SJ, writes of his memories of Fr. McKenna....

At the beginning of August, Cardinal Peter Turkson, President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, is participating in the programme "Ten Days for Peace" sponsored each year by the Catholic Church in Japan. Here is some of the reflection he is sharing on that pilgrimage:...

Who is the new Bishop of Rome? The camino or path he followed until now, where does it lead? One of the Jesuit broadcasters at Vatican Radio told me that, while waiting for the white smoke, he had prepared sketches or mini-biographies of the 20 Cardinals he thought most likely to be elected. But the name actually proclaimed, "Jorge Mario Bergoglio", was not among them, and like many other journalists, he found himself scrambling to discover who the 266th successor of St. Peter was, the one who began, "Fratelli e sorelle, buonasera! Brothers and sisters, good evening!"...

March is here, and this month, portending so much for our Church, providentially culminates with Easter Sunday. A little while ago, we lived 18 momentous days in February which began on 11.02 with Pope Benedict's announcement that he would be stepping down....

The Barque of Peter: Wednesday morning about 10:30, the popemobile entered St. Peter's Square. It wove back and forth along the narrow lanes kept clear so that the Holy Father could greet as many as possible. From where I sat in front of the Basilica's façade, it looked like a little white boat, the Pope its captain standing at the wheel, the popemobile sailing through a sea of cheering, waving, clapping, loving pilgrims....

Overnight the skies wept copious tears, but after daybreak of this Second Sunday of Lent, the rain stopped, and the day proved variable, undecided: cloud cover alternated with sunny patches, moments of welcome warming us between unfriendly blasts of biting wind. The Roman weather; utterly unable to make up its mind, seemed accurately to reflect the mixed feelings in the crowd of more than 100,000 who witnessed the 15 minutes of Pope Benedict XVI's last public Sunday Angelus....
