Jesus didn't name his parables, so what title should we give this one? When we name parables we draw attention to one of the characters, but to which character do we want to draw attention? The parable we began with has usually been called, the Parable of the Labourers in the Vineyard, but are they really what the parable is all about? Could it not also be called, the Parable of the Compassionate Employer? Is it about him or is it about the labourers? In either case, the parable raises still more questions:...

You may not have made a retreat in a long while–perhaps you've never made one–but something seems to be stirring within: a longing to deepen your relationship with God, or the need to face some changed circumstance in your life. An announcement at the back of the missalette catches your eye, "Ignatian Retreats, Guelph, ON." You contact the registrar, make the arrangements, and, despite your misgivings, you actually show up!...

When the Queen of Sheba visits King Solomon (1Kings 10:1-10), she is entertained by his answers to all her questions: this is proverbial wisdom, for which Solomon was justly famous. The Book of Proverbs gives us a taste of this kind of wisdom, which teaches shrewdness to the simple, knowledge and prudence to the young, and understanding of the words of the wise and their riddles. The fear of the Lord, however, is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs, 1:1- 7)....

We have come through the desolation of Good Friday to the consolation of Easter. The history of God's chosen people is the history of the unthinkable, from enslavement in Egypt, to the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple of God, only to rise and return. From the holocaust during the Second World War to the present day, it is a history of God's People dying and rising, not just once but several times....

Is it myth? Is it history? Is it epic? Is it prophecy? It's all of the above, and then some! These are the generations of Titanic, which begat Lord of the Rings, which begat Harry Potter, which begat Gladiator, which begat Noah....

November 22, 2013, marked the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and might be a good time to revisit Oliver Stone's 1991 film, JFK, and to re-read James W. Douglass's book, JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It Matters (Orbis Books, 2005)....
