The country we live in

is of trees, lakes, rivers and birds

its name on postcards, world maps

its history in songs “from Atlantic to Pacific”

like everything I know so well:

the mind not stopping to think

of my childhood school’s name till I leave it

Only now do I stop and think:

this country’s name is not of our language.
