A Time of New Hope

The new calendar has been hung on the kitchen wall, and slowly, but steadily, a few more minutes of daylight are appearing each day. January is the month of new beginnings; some of us are determined to lose weight, exercise more, or simply, spend more time enjoying our Canadian winter. These are all thoughts that have crossed our minds for several weeks.

Winter for me is a time of quiet and renewal. Just as the bare trees stand tall and strong against the last light of the day, I am enjoying the cooler weather. It always seems easier for us senior folks when we reach for a sweater rather than have to endure the humidity that hot summer days offer.

Like life, the changing seasons are great reminders that change is a normal part of our existence. We have to be prepared for every obstacle that comes our way, and not lose sight that by faith, we can survive anything.

Winter also brings us the anticipation of spring. By February, spring seems to be just around the corner and we are looking forward to seeing the buds return to the trees and the crocus blooms peek through, announcing that winter will soon be over.

In scripture we are reminded: “To everything there is a season”. The change of each season is another good time to count the blessings of our lives. For believers, the journey of life holds only joy because their death will be the beginning of a new life in heaven. For others, sadly, we hear them say: “This is it. All we have is right now.”

Jesus told the Good Thief hanging beside Him on the cross: “Today you will be with me in Paradise.” Perhaps in this extraordinary year of mercy, we can offer hope to those who have lost their way, and remind them that it is never too late to seek a friendship with the Lord. There are lost souls everywhere, seeking God but not aware that He is only a prayer away.

Let us keep our hearts open to those in need. Imagine if today we could convince just one more person that eternity is not just a figment of our imagination, but the promised land where those who give their best effort and believe in Him, will one day enjoy.
