Tongues of Fire

Source: Eric Jensen, SJ

Sometimes I feel so thick –

a few weeks ago

what seemed to me

like tongues of fire

appeared in a corner

of our yard but now

they have divided and dispersed

throughout the entire garden.

Not only that, but

with every little breeze

we are pervaded by the sweetest

most subtle perfumes.

Am I mistaken, or

is it Pentecost again?

I did try to ask the hummingbirds,

just for clarification,

but the little beasts

were too distracted

dancing around the fires

to give me a straightforward answer.
