Lent at the Hospice

The beauty of the late-winter snow on the trees

make it look like Christmas all over again.

We are past the bad news.

From “I love yous” to

“where is the lily I brought her yesterday?” to

“I should have put in my dentures” to

“what did she eat?”.

It is all unhurried,

time to care

for what appears to be the “little things”.

Only time for acceptance and peace and reconciliations.

Saw a bible beside Anna’s bed.

Wanted to ask her what her favourite passage was.

But she was asleep.

I need to learn to read the signs

of one who reaches out wordlessly.

“How do you feel about being here?” I asked him.

“We all have to die.” said Jim.

Thank God for their family and friends

and their “I love yous .”
