Ashes – Ash Wednesday 2022

Ashes

ashes on heads
on ashes of thoughts
on beds of ashes
sleep
asleep, asleep
how did we happen?
to burn
to ashes
our love for God
or God’s love for us?

wait, don’t say it.
the fire dies
the rain makes mud
of our burning love
now ashes.

sin is ashen
a decided grey
but worse the decision
to kill our wildest fires.

A bit of ash can appear inconsequential, but when I remove ashes from our woodstove, I am surprised at how heavy they are.
