Maple Boughs

The maple boughs hang low,
Their leaves all wet,
Weighed down with summer rain.
The parched earth is damp again,
And deep-rooted roots will get
Enough to see them through the coming snow.

These same boughs now are bare
Each branch bereft.
The earth lies buried under snow,
While roots are working far below
To bring forth buds
That autumn’s crimson leaves again may glare.
