A Donkey’s Story

Bethlehem's night is hushed and still,

Bright stars-shine-the air is chill.

A donkey's hooves echo down the street,
His burden-a man-and a lady sweet.

"My lady is weary and yet she smiles,
We three have travelled for many a mile.

Joseph -the man knocks at every door..
Please-a room for the night I hear him implore.

Not here.! No room! -those words men declare,
'Dear sir' I hear now 'Use the stable there'.

The place is bare save for some hay,
'Tis here that my lady and Joseph must stay.

The world stands still while cherubs fly-
Now my ears know the sound of a soft wee cry!

Houses are filled with proud, rich men
Unaware of the Splendor-in poor Bethlehem.

Yet some know the glory
Now under the sky —
Joseph-the man-
My lady-and I –"
