The Day of Rest

No cloud this afternoon on a late August Monday.

Last Mountain Lake’s placid waters shimmer.

Trees resting on the gentle rise across the way

Display green mantles already fringed with gold.

The peaceful warm sun warms the cottage deck

Joe silently spends the holiday reprieve

Reading in cool shade under the northern eave.

What a difference a day makes.  Yesterday

Birds battling seriously at the back door feeder

Pelicans soaring, diving past the front windows

Seagulls skimming the wave washed shore

Frothy from brassy seventy five passing boats or more

And one water ski doo buzzing endless circles in the bay.

Thank you God for the tranquility of today.

Frank Obrigewitsch, SJ, is pastor of St. Ignatius parish in Winnipeg.
