Holocaust Remembrance Day 2020

lift a thimble full of ashes
to your forehead and drink the bitter gall
lest we forget
let your circle-running mind
hit smack flat the wall
of its mendicant understanding
lest we forget
then shudder to remember
that not out of nowhere
but from some place even darker
arrived the infernal answer
lest we forget
thin opaque puddles
often cover over
abysses of the heart
lest we forget
that in Love’s Gospel
hatred gives its mite to the Temple
only then to covet its destruction
lest we forget
the Exodus is ongoing
lest we forget
justice is up-hilling
lest we forget
there’s something greater
here than Solomon
that demands our most
nauseous respect.
