Thoughts Adrift

Source: 123RF.com

In colourful abandon
they float down to me
these autumn leaves
dancing in mid air.

The green of youth
flies by with
the orange of people and places.

There’s the jaded yellow
of trying, tired days
struggling for recognition
walking weary ways
midst painful paths
leading to lost hopes.

Ah! here comes the crimson maple
adding colour to a darkening day
cradled in new beginnings.

They seem to settle
in pretty patterns
rustling on the browning grass
of yesterday
rocked by a gentle breeze,
until a great gust
of wild wind whips up
the heap of happy hues
into new art
created by
a loving God.

How exquisitely Viola captures the myriad hues of autumn’s dancing leaves in the context of God’s loving creation! I am reminded of my own daily experience as I walk along the river in my hometown of Melbourne, Australia. The ever-changing landscape from season to season constantly reminds me of the presence of God in all His creative glory. Just this morning my eyes took in with delight ducks paddling across the bend in the river, birds chirping in the branches overhead, and sunlight casting sparkling diamonds on the water below. Like Viola, I was moved to reflect on His marvelous wonders. “God’s in His heaven, all’s right with the world.”

Lovely images, Viola! I am now singing The Autumn Leaves, but no doubt not as well as your husband would. Of course, like many others of our generation might, I feel you have captured the autumn of my own life through these simple yet wonderful images!
