Season of Creation Koans, 2019

Catholic Bishops of Ireland
i.

Church is mostly Earth
chanting
in polyphonic voices
too numerous
to hear.

ii.

Before you go shopping
before you go chopping
before you go chomping
at the bit
to gallop to domination,
look in the mirror
and see Creation.

iii.

What did the priest say
when Climate Change
entered the confessional?
“Forgive me, Mother, for I have sinned.”

iv.

GOD is a big word.
So is EARTH.
Friends,
let’s walk quietly a while
pondering
how we are to speak
these two big words
together
truly
from our little mouths.

v.

The day they start
canonizing trees
is the day the communion of saints
begins feeling
really at home.

Greg Kennedy, SJ works as a spiritual director at the Ignatius Jesuit Centre in Guelph, Ontario. He is author of Reupholstered Psalms volumes I, II, and III; and Amazing Friendships between Animals and Saints (Novalis Press).
