Pilgrims’ Progress: Journal Entries from a 60th Anniversary Pilgrimage – #6

On August 15, 2019, thirteen Canadian Jesuits will note their 60th Anniversary as members of the Society of Jesus.  Two members of this group – Charlie Pottie Pate, SJ and David Eley, SJ  – have chosen to make a special pilgrimage to mark the occasion.  They have graciously agreed to share their journal entries and photos with igNation which will post them once or twice a week.

# 6 Journal, Tuesday June 11.

Today began well and ended well!  But in between some glitches!

Two new visitors at the Jesuit residence this morning at breakfast, a German Jesuit and an Indian Jesuit (actually a novice). They arrived last evening. A lively breakfast chat.

Then David and I headed to central train station by bus.  All was going well but the bus driver didn’t leave us off at the right spot. She seemed a bit irritated??  Anyway, we did ask someone else and he told us that we were a bit away so we took a taxi for the rest of the route.

We got our Scandinavia pass all validated and went and rested in the lounge until time of train. Supposed to leave at 1:27.  Got there, then it said it would be 10 mins late, then 20 mins, finally 35 mins late.

It finally came but it was hardly in the station for a minute and it closed the doors on us. We were just ready to get on! Very annoying and frustrating since we had to catch a correspondence to Oslo at Goteborg.

The next train was at 2:27. We got that one but of course missed the correspondence to Oslo in Goteborg, Sweden. After we got out of Copenhagen and into Sweden, there were lovely fields and everything lush.  When we finally arrived in Goteborg, Sweden we had to figure when the earliest train was (at 6:55 am) and find a hotel here in Goteborg for the night.

A bit of an extra unexpected expense. We found one near the station. Someone had just cancelled their reservation. The lady at the desk has been so lovely and gracious. It made up for all the frustration.  We had our dinner in their restaurant. Very homey and delicious shrimp on toast with egg, mayonnaise and pickles with a Swedish beer. Hmm. All is well again with the world!!

So this will be short tonight. Early rise. Will write from Norway tomorrow night….hopefully!..
