I found this poem that I composed many years ago, when I was struggling to overcome a time of deep depression. How blessed I am to know that God provides blessings through others.
By the grace of God and thanks to the listening ears of a good friend, I turned a corner and my faith was strengthened.
God invites us to make changes in our lives every season of Lent. They don’t have to be major corrections; a kinder attitude towards a spouse, a more thoughtful style in the workplace, a gift of time spent with an elderly relative are all ways in which we can evolve into a better image of Christ’s presence in the world.
Here is the poem that was written with a heart full of hope, and a prayer that God would come to my help. He did!
A TOAST TO FRIENDSHIP
I toast our friendship
with my early morning tea,
And thank you for invoking thoughts
of the person I used to be.
Your caring strikes a special chord
of life within my world,
Encouraging the corners of my
fragile, cobwebbed soul.
I seek those other times
of freedom and abandon,
Where hours drifted, colours sifted,
and dreams took hold of
each new, undiscovered day.
The time will come again,
I can’t predict the day,
But I’m ready to feel life’s joy again,
In hope and love – God’s way.
