Lift High the Cross

In the Society of Jesus (Jesuit Order) the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (September 14) always began the new school year. This year it is particularly apt to remember the sufferings of Jesus on the cross because of the scandal in the North American Church and because of the many who are suffering from the unfaithfulness and sins of some of our leaders in the Church, shepherds who became wolves among Jesus’ flock.

Like many I am angry, ashamed, and discouraged by the scandal. What do we faithful do in face of this reality? Some say to stop supporting the Church, stop going to Church, etc. While these angry kind of responses are understandable, they are exactly the opposite of what our response should be.

Our response should be to cling to the Body of Christ, to heal the Body of Christ, to nurture the Body of Christ. We do that first and foremost by striving personally to become the best person that God is calling us to be through penance, being fed with the Bread of Life and Cup of Eternal Salvation, by praying, and by doing good works.

In other words we support, build up the people of God by our personal witness to our faith. Jesus is the source of strength, healing, and peace especially in the midst of tribulation. So in face of all trouble we faithful ‘lift high the Cross, the love of Christ proclaim.’

The peace of Jesus be with you.
