Something in Simeon’s Speech

Two parents three days lost

without a child

all the while found in the temple:

it was less a case of running away

as a time for touching home.

“How could you do this to us?”

“How could I have not?”

The world is, after all, so tidal

ebb and flow

what’s left to discuss?

The first, brilliant star at night

is like a good, wholesome kid in grown company;

he had a hunch of this

and spent some years politely raising faith

in wish fulfilment,

until that day he felt the world

sufficiently strong to hear

a word and see a sign

of the unnerving love

called justice.

Ever since then, our eyes-closed dreams

cling to the first stable twinkle seen,

while our hope, once awoken, rides

tied to falling stars.
