The Sligo Hospital Revisited

Source: Frank Obrigewitsch, SJ

Mary drops me at the front entrance.

The day is grey as the interior walls,

and I stand and wait with others

who sit and wait for who knows what or who.

Parking illegally, telling the attendant

the ‘truth’, “A priest waits for me within”,

Catherine hurries in, guides me

up stairs through clean dingy halls

to the patient’s room then hurries away

to forestall hospital’s ‘appropriate action’ being taken!

Chipper Angela chats about family, card games, and friends,

buoyed by a visit and blessing.

No black crows haunt the car park today.

The afternoon rejoices bright in the sun;

The grey Mall pavement stretches down

to the Glass House and Yeats Building

across the Garavogue river in Sligo Town.

Frank Obrigewitsch, SJ, is pastor of St. Ignatius parish in Winnipeg.
