Bill German, SJ – 1925 – 2017

The wisdom Bill embodied went to his waist:
He let out his belt so much
That he ended in suspenders.
He had an old evosoajah’s air
When attending due homage, dutifully
Offering from his magnanimous stores
Scotch, gin, almonds, chocolate,
And a corner of every jewel
Found within his kingdom.
Little shy of death could cloud the joy
That festooned his person
Like Christmas cards strung along
The string that circled his crowded room.
He played at cards
And told the future
What he thought was best,
While she, out of deference
To his years and joviality,
Tried within reason to concur.
Bill
Loved and loving
A smile
Shining out
From upturned thumbs
A man to make you marvel
At God’s very good humour.
